Once again, The Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher finds herself immersed in an elegant mystery. It all starts with an early awakening and a rare moment of free time. After dropping her daughters off at a charity event, Phryne pays a visit to a university professor she had met on a previous case. During lunch, the professor invites Phryne to dine at his home in Williamstown later that week. The evening ends on a mysterious note when Phryne discovers an opium pipe in the park and later stumbles upon the body of a Chinese man on the beach.
The cause of the man's death remains unclear, but it is ultimately ruled a homicide. Meanwhile, the teenage sister-in-law of Phryne's long-time lover goes missing from her home. Things take a sinister turn when one of the professor's colleagues is murdered at a Chinese-themed party. Phryne can't shake the feeling that these incidents are somehow connected. To make matters more perplexing, she begins receiving ominous notes in her letterbox, warning her to "REPENT" and that "THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH."
In addition to the resourceful Phryne, the story also features her three wards, Ruth and Jane, who are investigating an embezzler at the Institute, and Tinker, enlisted to help uncover the author of the threatening messages. As the mystery deepens, Phryne must rely on her intuition, wit, and the help of her companions to unravel the truth and bring the culprits to justice once and for all.
